In order to understand the target users, I collected statistic regarding the consumer segmentation in the online furniture market. From Statista Global Consumer Survey in 2018, almost 60% of furniture consumers were between 25-44 years old. 

So I decided to focus on users whose age are between 25-44 years old.

Furmingo provides you a simple and easy way to search furniture and view the selected furniture in the room via augmented reality.  Furmingo is also a online community where you can get inspiration of home decorating from others.

The main sections of Furmingo are Feartured, Category, Sales and Inspiration. In the Featured page, users can browse featured furniture.

Users can search the furniture in the category page.  They can easily narrow down the search results by selecting the area where they are going to place the furniture.

In the Sales page, users can select all kinds of furniture deals.

For users who are seeking for home decoration inspiration, they can browse other users' posts on the Inspiration page.

From survey and interview results, more than 80% of the participants agree on that color is the factor they would definitely consider when purchasing furniture. In Furmingo, the color filter contains different collections of colors, which is helpful for users to find furniture that is in the same color scheme.

I conducted qualitative interviewed with 5 users who have experience purchasing furniture online to understand their pain points and expectations when purchasing furniture.

I tested Furmingo with 5 participants, who are within the age range of the target users. The usability test can be divided into three parts.

1. Ask the user's general impression of the app.

2. Let the users find a piece of furniture to see whether filters and search bar are easy to use.

3, Learn about user's understanding of icons, texts, and images of the App

The original design of the review provided users with chips to quickly narrow down comments related to the keywords. But 4 of the 5  test participants said they prefer seeing more pictures posted by the past customers.

Therefore, in the latest version of Furmingo, I redesigned the customer reviews card into image + texts format.

Question:  "What do you think of 'View in 3D' means before you click on it?"

Answer: " If I click on it, I can view the piece of furniture in 360 degrees."

In order to inform the users with the real content after they click the button, I changed the button into "View in room (AR)."

All of the test participants said the shopping cart icon is invisible. Besides, they don't understand the circle with a letter on the bottom of the product image. 

The design of a circle with a letter is a place holder for the furniture brand. But all of the users can not understand the meaning. 

In the lastest Furmingo app, I placed the shopping car icon on the place where the letter used to be. which is easier for users to identify the call-to-action icon.

Color is one of the most important factors that affects users to make the decision for buying a piece of furniture online. The original design of the color filter is to provide users with colors categorized by the lightness of the color. But few users suggested that sometimes they prefer selecting a collection of similar color and see all the products because sometimes they cannot tell the differences between those similar colors.

In the redesigned app, I designed different collections of colors, which is easier for users to search for furniture with similar colors.

How do you make sure the users will use Furmingo again after purchase?

To increase user's certainty of the furniture before purchase is not enough for users to keep using Furmingo. Post-purchase experience is also important. The post-purchase experience might include moving the furniture to where it should be placed, installing the furniture, examining the furniture, and returning the furniture if the users find it broken or not the same as expectation.

The uncertainty of furniture size.

 Even though users can place the furniture in the room via AR, they still can not make sure that the size of the furniture is right for the room. How would you increase the user's certainty of the furniture size?


How do you deal with the used furniture users no longer need?

Users who move frequently always have the problems with dealing with the used furniture. Can users sell or give the furniture to people who need it in Furmingo?

Engineering constraints should be inscribed early in the design process.
Since the client used Squarespace as the CMS, we faced great amount of technical issues when executing the design. For example, we include the primary menu and secondary menu in our design, but none of the template in Squarespace supports the menu design and the add-on codes did not work in Squarespace. Therefore, we had to change design to make sure we have two menus when using the template.  


Next Steps

I would like to incorporate the feedback derived from testing into the next version of the prototype, such as-

  • Provide users with installation video of the furniture after they receive the furniture.

  • Combine measurement technology to let users know the size of the furniture.
  • Notice of the size of the furniture package.
  • Design the used furniture exchange/donate/sell platform for users.
