Xinno Health is a cross-border health tech summit hosted in Seattle, WA. It brings together health-tech entrepreneurs, experts and investors from both the Pacific Northwest and China for three days of in-depth discussions, seminars, and networking.

Objectives

My task was to design a website and printed artifacts to introduce Xinno Health Summit and attract health-tech entrepreneurs, experts and investors to buy summit tickets online.

In the Rapid Design Event, I was assigned to  design 4 hi-fi user interfaces for Reality LA mobile app based on its website and theme.

Xinno Health Summit is the first of many health-tech summits which has been hosted by VestLink in Seattle. It does not have any brand guideline and design elements.

The Solution

The Solution

We have design team, marketing team, public relation team, and business development team. Different teams came up with various solutions. As for design team, we need to design the Xinno Health website and artifacts to attract target audience.The process of achieving the goals is below: 

 Set up the brand guideline for Xinno Health.

Key Design Elements

The key design elements we chose are gradient waves and layered genes. ① We used the brand color -blue and purple to create the gradient waves, which is representing the futuristic technology. ② The combination of waves and genes is representing the theme of this summit- health-focused technology.

Cross-border collaboration, health-tech, and innovation are keywords representing the core mission of Xinno Health. To represent the theme of health, we put the gene element in the center of letter "O". We also increased the font weight of Xinno to show the primary and secondary relationship between Xinno and Health.

We chose a set of purple and blue to tell the story: the purple represents technology and future, while the blue represents creativity, innovation and dynamic. These two have been used as headline colors and highlight colors.

Xinno is a brand created by VestLink in 2018. Xinno Health and Xinno Week are two main summits of Xinno. In order to give more exposure to the Xinno brand and inform the viewers of the other Xinno summit- Xinno Week, I designed the primary menu that includes these items: Xinno, Xinno Health, Xinno Week, Contact Us and Chinese.

In order to strengthen the Xinno brand image and meet the stakeholder's need of increasing the exposure of other Xinno summits, I designed the ① primary menu and the ② secondary menu. We included "中文" in the primary menu for target users from both Asian and U.S.


③, ⑥ , ⑦ are call-to-action buttons that highlighted in purple. I centered the ③ button on the hero, which can be really easy for users to find out and buy tickets.

⑤ is the "event highlights" section that has three columns of contents that highlight the main activities in Xinno Health Summit. The titles of the columns are call-to-action sentences.

I used the following heuristics to conduct competitive analysis:  overview,  offerings, identity, qualities representing through their identities, brand strengths, brand weakness, brand opportunities for Xinno Health.

Findings from competitive analysis: 

1. Three summits are not visual appealing because of they lack of clear brand images.
2. Therefore, we can enforce Xinno Health Summit brand image through logo design, providing key design elements, and clear brand color.

Reflection

Engineering constraints should be inscribed early in the design process.
Since the client used Squarespace as the CMS, we faced great amount of technical issues when executing the design. For example, we include the primary menu and secondary menu in our design, but none of the template in Squarespace supports the menu design and the add-on codes did not work in Squarespace. Therefore, we had to change design to make sure we have two menus when using the template.

Do your research before ask
You might have thousands of questions in the design process. But most of them can be solved by googling. It would be better to do your research before ask, which can save other’s time. But at the same time, its important to be not blocked on a doubt for more than a certain amount of time and in that case use other’s assistance to get the work done quickly.

 

Don’t use your own assumptions to decide everything.
Having meetings or send out a questionnaire are helpful for you to understand business goals from stakeholders. Based on the information you have from the questionnaire and meetings, you can provide a moodboard to verify your assumptions of what the stakeholders would like to see in their brand.

 

Communication is a must
As a new member and junior designer in the team, it’s hard to present your design thinking with confidence when you know people in your team have more experience and deeper understanding of the product. That is true that you might not come up with the right design. However, communication with your team is the key to verify and improve your design. You can also learn from other designer’s design thinking process to make up for your own design.
